NCIS Abby

Here's a digital sketch of Pauley Perrette a.k.a Abby Sciuto from TV series NCIS. When I was researching photo reference, I was surprised to discover that Ms. Perrette is almost 40! (Not that there's anything wrong with that). It must be a combination of her high voice, elfin features and her character's goth getup and pigtails which make her seem so much younger.

Originally this was going to be a self-promotional video sketch for YouTube but once again my screen capture program crashed halfway through saving and I lost the footage. Bummer.

About 90minutes in Painter 8 using the Pen/Scratchboard tool.

That's outstanding! Does Pauley know about this yet? If not, can I send it to her?

Maggie

PS -She has a young inner life, too. I think that's the most important thing. But, she's _only_ 37. ;P

Hey Mags!

Glad you like it,

You can send it to her if you want. Let me know if you want a hi-res.

She'll be 38 in a few weeks. :D

Lovely, expressive piece...I really enjoy your scribbly-sketchy stuff, Chris (well, of course I love the finished stuff too...but I really like seeing those loose lines!)

The scratchboard tool is just about the only tool I ever use in Painter.
It's the best...

Ah, crap. Some stalker has sent her offline (well, into hiding online) as of last month. I don't have a way to contact her any more.

Heri- Luckily it wasn't the computer that crashed (or I would have lost the drawing too), just the stupid screen capture program.

Chrissie- Yeah it took me a while over the years to trust my instincts and get looser with my inking. I learnt that spontaneous misplaced lines are usually better than meticulously created correct ones.

FerdinandKreozot- Thanks man. Love your blog, and love the Popeye piece.

Kollyo- Thanks!

Elliot- Only just started using it. Sure beats the wobbly Photoshop line. Very nice tapering too.

Maggie- Yeah read about that. Would have made a nice birthday gift.

Freaking awesome as usual, Chris. All these months looking at your blog, and I wondered why you used Photoshop for inking instead of Painter. It really is far superior for straight drawing, and the Scratchboard Tool is my most often-used brush as well.

As regards the screen capture thing, did you know you can create a Painter movie file without any outside software? These files will only play back in Painter (it just records each stroke and recreates it onscreen), but you could use these to ensure that you don't lose your screen cap footage. Just screen cap the movie as it plays in Painter.

Thanks guys.

Ryan- Yeah, I'm only just starting to discover Painter's ful potential.

Thanks also for the info about the Painter movie file. I'll definitely look into it.

To find out more about that, look in the help topics for "scripts." There's some pretty cool uses for them other than just recording movies.
